Moses Wilheln Shapira - late 19th century dealer in Moabite antiquities and rare Hebrew documents. Declared to be dealing in fraudulent antiquities, but then claims to have 3,000 year old fragments of Deuteronomy found in a cave by the river Arnon (east of Qumran and the Dead Sea) by Bedouins. Documents are declared to be fake documents by the French, the Germans, and the British Museum, Shapira is ruined and ultimately commits suicide. This is the story of one man's hunt for the Shapira Deuteronomy fragments and the truth. Very engaging read. Are those fragments the first of the Dead Sea Scrolls found some 70 years before the ones we know today, or are they very clever forgeries?
