   The great thing about this translation is that it keeps the poetic rhythm and alliteration of the original while making it readable to modern readers.

   Here's an example from the opening lines.

   In habyte as a heremyte vnholy off werkes
   went wyde yn thys world wonders to here

   If you are interested in understanding the Bible, presumably you are also interested in knowing how the Early Christians understood its texts and the faith taught by the Apostles. If for this reason and/or for other reasons, you are interested in the Early Church Fathers - even if just the Greek Fathers - and/or the Vulgate, you would do well to learn Latin. Ancient Latin translations of the Bible and the Greek Fathers supply some of what's missing in the extant Greek manuscripts of those works. Sometimes more remains of a Greek Father's writings in Latin translation than in Greek. Then there's Augustine, and Aquinas... Plus there's all the Latin in the copious footnotes in the Patrologia Graeca.

   So, if you want to learn post-classical ("Later" or "Patristic") Latin, and agree that the fastest way to learn ancient languages well is by using the functionality of Logos/Verbum, you could start to look into it but then encounter a set of facts that constitute a big enough problem. The smaller Latin dictionaries are nowhere near adequate for the task. Lewis and Short is fairly complete in coverage, but written in a version of English that is now to a degree archaic, and even before that happened, it was well known to need many corrections and additions (see Souter's preface); and on top of that, it doesn't give complete definitions like today's best dictionaries do. These things can slow a student right down, and we generally do not have that kind of time. There's a wonderful Latin Lexicon of St. Thomas Aquinas in Verbum/Logos, but it won't cover enough patristic vocabulary, and it doesn't even cover all the vocabulary or usage in Aquinas. There's the huge Oxford Latin Dictionary (2nd ed.) here, which will have most of the vocabulary and most of the meanings that you'd need properly defined in current English and ordered, but its official coverage ends intentionally just before early Christian Latin texts began. There's Albert Blaise's wonderful Dictionnnaire...des Auteurs Chrétiens - but only in French, and not in Logos/Verbum. What would be the best solution?

   There's a Glossary of Later Latin by Alexander Souter (part of the OLD team) that was made as a supplement to the Oxford Latin Dictionary. It was made especially to make possible reading the Early Church Fathers and the Bible in Latin. It's about 450 pages, from OUP, 1949. That, especially if integrated or linked somehow with the OLDv2, would be a fantastic solution. It appears to cost about $30 USD in print.

19. Origen (tr. John Behr), On FIrst Principles: A Reader's Edition (2020: Oxford University Press)

    This is the new definitive English translation of one of the most important writings from one of the most important priest/theologian/philosophers of the Early Church, Origen's Peri Archon. St. Augustine, though he had to issue corrections to some ideas that reportedly came from it, thought so highly of Origen that he urged St. Jerome to pause writing his Vulgate in order to translate more of his works into Latin first. A later father wrote, "When Origen was good, there was no one better; but when he was bad, there was no one worse," referring also, most likely, especially to this work. Yet Sts. Basil and Gregory incorporated a number of passages from it into their Philokalia, itself an extremely important work as recognized in Eastern Christianity, important partly on account of the inclusion of this material.

    As the foregoing hints, On First Principles is important not only on account of Origen's genius, resources, and learning, but also for its relation to issues of heresy and orthodoxy, to philosophy, and to the history of the Church. On First Principles will reward the prayerful and careful reader who grounds himself in Sacred Scripture and the other great Early Church Fathers from St. Ignatius onward, especially if the reader compares it to the other great summaries of Christian thought, as were given in Justin Martyr's Apologies and Dialogue, St. Augustine's City of God XI-XXII, etc.

    This affordable ($38.50 Canadian dollars) "reader's edition" spans 480 pages in print. A two-volume Latin/Greek/English version exists that would be even better to have, except that it would cost about $200, so hardly anyone would buy it. This reader's edition does contain a scholarly introduction, likely a condensed version of what is in the two volume set. Behr's translation of the text is intended to replace Butterworth's translation, which unfortunately is not in Logos/Verbum either. I would argue that Butterworth's translation and approach shared with Koetschau should still be read and considered, but Behr's is the new standard.

    The only translation of this work, On First Principles, in Logos/Verbum is from the severely outdated (and archaic language) Ante-Nicene Church Father's series. So please vote for this. Thanks for considering.
